People may brush their teeth more than twice a day. The tongue, not so much. Your tongue functions as a carpet, soaking up bacteria from your mouth. When left unclean, these bacteria can cause numerous dental problems.

To remove the bacteria, a tongue scraper or toothbrush must be used. Brushing your tongue cleans it and provides several benefits.

Why Brush Your Tongue?

Helps Get Rid of Bad Breath

The bacteria on the tongue causes bad breath. A simple method to tackle this is brushing your tongue. Bad breath could also be a sign of some underlying medical disorders. Make sure to consult a doctor regarding it.

Alters Sense of Taste

Taste buds may be blocked by bacteria on your tongue and can cause an altered sense of taste.

Reduces Chances of Oral Thrush

“Candida fungus” can cause a fungal infection known as oral thrush. Rinsing your mouth after each meal and scraping your tongue can reduce the chances of oral thrush.

Overall Dental Health

Brushing and cleaning your tongue helps to reduce bacteria. An array of diseases can be prevented through oral care.

How to Clean Your Tongue Effectively

  • Invest in a soft tongue scraper: Clean your tongue using a soft tongue scraper post brushing. Make sure to rinse your mouth with water after cleaning.
  • Brush with your toothbrush: A toothbrush is not as effective as tongue scrapers. To clean with a brush use one with soft bristles.
  • Post brushing: Wash your toothbrush for 20 seconds. Brush the entire tongue surface from back to front. Rinse your mouth with water.
  • Toothbrush heads: Many toothbrushes come with a rubbery surface behind the bristles. This can also be used for tongue cleaning.
  • Use antiseptic mouthwash: A mouthwash would not replace brushing the tongue. However, it helps to reduce bad breath.

How Often Should You Clean Your Tongue?

Dental hygienists advise scraping or brushing your tongue twice a day after brushing your teeth. Make it a habit to clean your tongue along with your teeth for good oral health.

Remember, a healthy tongue must be pink in color. Keep an eye in case you see any changes in tongue color.
