Sedation Dentistry

Your treatment can feel calmer, shorter, and more manageable.

For adults with severe dental anxiety—or for patients planning longer or more complex care—Dr. Daniel Vasquez offers nitrous oxide and prescribed oral conscious sedation. The goal is simple: help you feel deeply relaxed while Dr. Vasquez personally provides your treatment and carefully monitors your response.

This is not IV sedation. Oral conscious sedation uses prescribed medication taken by mouth. You remain able to breathe independently and respond to verbal or physical direction. Nitrous oxide is inhaled through a comfortable nasal mask and can be adjusted throughout treatment.

  • Adults only
  • No IV sedation
  • Personally provided by Dr. Vasquez
  • Pulse, oxygen saturation, blood pressure, breathing, and responsiveness monitored as appropriate
  • Candidacy confirmed before treatment

A Patient-First Philosophy

“Everything is about the patient. I listen first. If sedation is the best recommendation for that patient, that is what I recommend. When someone trusts me enough to place their care in my hands, my responsibility is not only to deliver beautiful dentistry. It is to protect their health, monitor them carefully, and be prepared at every step.”

Dr. Vasquez has provided adult conscious sedation for many years and continues the education and recertification required for safe practice. His training is refreshed through pharmacology, medical risk assessment, monitoring, airway awareness, emergency preparedness, and appropriate patient selection. That discipline allows the appointment to remain unhurried and focused.

Two Comfort Options

Nitrous oxide and oxygen

Often called laughing gas, nitrous oxide is inhaled through a small nasal mask. It can reduce anxiety and help a patient feel more at ease while remaining awake and responsive. Its effects usually diminish soon after the gas is stopped, but Dr. Vasquez will provide individualized instructions for every appointment.

Adult oral conscious sedation

For selected adults, Dr. Vasquez may prescribe oral medication before the procedure. The medication can create a deeper level of relaxation while the patient remains conscious, breathes independently, and can respond to direction. Some patients remember little of the appointment or feel that time passed quickly, but responses vary and amnesia is never guaranteed.

No IV medication is administered. This practice does not present oral conscious sedation as general anesthesia or as being fully asleep.

Sedation and Local Anesthetic Are Different

Sedation is used to reduce anxiety and improve comfort. It does not replace local anesthetic. When a procedure requires numbing, Dr. Vasquez still uses local anesthetic so the treatment area is comfortable.

When Sedation May Help

  • Severe dental anxiety or fear after a difficult past experience
  • Major oral surgery, multiple extractions, or wisdom tooth treatment
  • Dental implant placement, bone grafting, or related procedures
  • Long restorative appointments or several treatments completed in one visit
  • Selected cosmetic treatment or a small smile makeover
  • Root canal therapy or urgent care when anxiety makes treatment difficult
  • A strong gag reflex, difficulty sitting for extended periods, or sensitivity to dental sights and sounds

Sedation is not automatically recommended simply because a procedure is long. The decision is based on the individual patient, their medical history, their medications, their anxiety, and the planned treatment.

Safety Begins Before the Appointment

The most important part of sedation care begins before medication is given. Dr. Vasquez reviews the patient’s health history, current prescriptions and supplements, allergies, past experiences with anesthesia or sedation, and any conditions that may affect breathing, circulation, or medication response.

  1. Listen and understand. Dr. Vasquez discusses the patient’s fears, goals, prior dental experiences, and the amount of treatment being considered.
  2. Review health and medications. The team confirms medical conditions and checks for potential interactions or contraindications.
  3. Select the right option. Nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, standard local anesthetic care, or referral is chosen based on the patient—not by routine.
  4. Plan treatment in advance. Clinical care, consent, financial arrangements, and insurance questions are addressed before the treatment day whenever possible.
  5. Give written instructions. The patient receives individualized directions about medication, eating and drinking, clothing, escort requirements, and recovery.
  6. Confirm a responsible adult. Oral sedation patients must arrive and return home with a responsible adult and must not drive until Dr. Vasquez’s instructions allow.

During Treatment

Dr. Vasquez personally provides the sedation and remains responsible for the patient throughout the procedure. The team observes the patient’s comfort, breathing, responsiveness, pulse, oxygen saturation, and blood pressure according to the selected protocol. The appointment is paced carefully; quality is never rushed.

After Treatment

The patient is observed until Dr. Vasquez determines that the appropriate discharge criteria have been met. The responsible adult receives post-operative directions. Rest, supervision, medication precautions, driving restrictions, and follow-up are explained according to the individual treatment and sedation plan.

A safe sedation visit depends on partnership. Patients must follow all pre-operative and post-operative instructions exactly and provide a complete, accurate medical and medication history.

When Referral Is the Right Decision

Not every patient is an appropriate candidate for in-office oral conscious sedation. If a medical condition, medication profile, airway concern, level of sedation need, or procedure requires a hospital-based environment, IV sedation, general anesthesia, or another specialist, Dr. Vasquez will explain the concern and refer appropriately. Protecting the patient always comes first.

Sedation + Digital Dentistry

Comfort and efficiency work together. Digital planning, 3D imaging, intraoral scanning, guided implant treatment, and chairside CAD/CAM dentistry allow Dr. Vasquez to understand the case before the appointment and complete more treatment with fewer interruptions.

When clinically appropriate and authorized, a crown or other chairside restoration may be designed, milled, and placed during the same visit. For a patient receiving sedation, this can reduce the need to return for a separate delivery appointment. The promise is not that every case is completed in one visit; the promise is that the office has the technology and experience to use the patient’s time wisely.

Connected Care

Emergency Dentistry

Pain and fear often arrive together. Once urgent symptoms are stabilized and the diagnosis is clear, sedation may help an appropriate adult receive needed care without anxiety becoming the barrier.

Oral Surgery

Sedation may support carefully planned extractions, wisdom tooth treatment, bone grafting, and other surgical procedures. Three-dimensional imaging helps Dr. Vasquez see the anatomy before treatment and plan conservatively.

Implant Dentistry

Implant placement and related grafting are pre-planned digitally. Sedation can help selected adults remain relaxed during the procedure while the team follows the established monitoring protocol.

Restorative & Same-Day Dentistry

For longer restorative visits, oral sedation may allow multiple procedures to be completed efficiently. Chairside CEREC technology can make eligible crowns, veneers, and short-span bridges in the office, reducing additional visits.

Preventive Dentistry

The ultimate goal is to help patients return to consistent care before problems become painful or complex. Sedation can help rebuild trust, but prevention and routine hygiene are what protect that progress.

What Patients Commonly Notice

  • A calmer arrival and less awareness of dental sights, sounds, and time
  • The ability to complete necessary or extensive care without feeling overwhelmed
  • Little memory of portions of the visit for some patients—although this varies
  • A carefully structured appointment with instructions established in advance
  • A team focused on comfort, monitoring, and respectful communication

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this IV sedation?

No. Dr. Vasquez offers nitrous oxide and adult oral conscious sedation using prescribed medication. No IV medication is administered.

Will I be asleep?

No promise of sleep is made. With oral conscious sedation, you remain conscious, breathe independently, and can respond to direction. You may feel very drowsy and deeply relaxed.

Will I remember the appointment?

Many patients report limited memory or that the appointment felt much shorter. Individual responses vary, and complete amnesia cannot be guaranteed.

Will the procedure still be numb?

Yes, when the procedure requires it. Sedation reduces anxiety; local anesthetic numbs the treatment area.

Who can receive oral conscious sedation?

Dr. Vasquez provides it only to adults who are appropriate candidates after a medical, medication, and dental review.

Can I drive myself?

No. A responsible adult must bring you, remain available, and drive you home. Follow the written restrictions provided by the office.

Can several procedures be completed in one visit?

Often, yes. Digital planning and chairside technology may allow extensive or same-day care when clinically appropriate and financially or insurance-authorized.

How am I monitored?

Dr. Vasquez and the team monitor the measurements and clinical signs required for your sedation plan, including pulse, oxygen saturation, blood pressure, breathing, and responsiveness.

What if I am not a candidate?

Dr. Vasquez will explain why and discuss another approach or refer you to the appropriate specialist or setting.

Is sedation safe?

Sedation has risks, as do all medications and procedures. Careful selection, accurate health information, proper dosing, monitoring, preparedness, and following instructions are essential. Dr. Vasquez discusses benefits, risks, and alternatives before consent.
